Catholic Europe is awash with secret symbols. If you’re carting around bored kids, challenge them to identify the saints and holy figures by their attributes.
The Archangel Michael is the leader of the Army of God, and frequently carries a flaming sword. In the Book of Revelation, he has the power to defeat the fallen angel, Satan:
“There was war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven.”

As the angel of death, Archangel Michael ferries the righteous to heaven. But he also descends to purgatory to allow tormented souls to redeem themselves. It is Michael who will be responsible for weighing each soul on a set of scales during the Last Judgement.
