Sebastiansfriedhof, Salzburg, Austria 1

by Elinor

St. Sebastian’s Cemetery owes its yellow loveliness to Andrea Bereleto, who turned the old cathedral grounds into an Italian campo santo around the year 1600.

You’ll find the titan of Salzburg, Prince Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, in a grandiose mausoleum in the center of the grounds. Because of his fight with his nephew Marcus Sittikus, he was not allowed to be buried in the Dom.

Most people come here to view the grave of Constanze Mozart and admire the gruesome carvings of skulls, but it’s a very restful place nonetheless. Visit when the sun is out and the grass is green.

There’s an oft-told story that places Count Berchtold, foreign minister of the Austro-Hungarian Empire during the early 20th century, and Victor Adler, leader of the Social Democratic Workers’ Party, in a heated discussion.* War was thundering on the horizon, and Adler was arguing that it might lead to a Russian revolution. “And who will lead […]

Mars, Landeszeughaus, Graz, Austria

Accompanied by Minerva, Mars – the Roman God of War – protects the Landeszeughaus. Granted, he looks more like Porthos from the 3 Musketeers than a martial deity, but that’s not entirely his fault. He was created by the Baroque sculptor, Giovanni Mamolo.
