Rising like an amputated nautilus from the Mur river is the Murinsel (“Island in the Mur”). It was created by Vito Acconci in 2003, when Graz became the European Capital of Culture. Walking through the interior is a bit like hanging out with Dr. Doolittle inside the Great Pink Sea Snail.
Visiting Tip
The walkways can be accessed from either side of the river – one entrance is near the Dreifaltigkeitskirche and the other is close by the Mariahilferkirche. There’s a (somewhat tired) café, a small amphitheater, and a children’s playground. At night, the Murinsel is illuminated with blue and green lights.
