The brainchild of Count István Széchenyi, a Hungarian hero. A veteran of the Napoleonic wars, Széchenyi was one of the key forces in transforming Budapest from a relative backwater to a modern hub of international trade and a center of national fervor (the Chain Bridge is officially named the “Széchenyi Lánchíd” in his honor). He’s pictured on the 5000 forint banknote.
