Ralph Hotere is one of New Zealand’s most famous contemporary artists—a painter and sculptor who mixes minimalism with political commentary, monochromatic palettes with shining metals. The Hotere Garden Oputae is located on Constitution Street in Port Chalmers, right near the flagstaff. There is a top notch view of the port and the harbor.
Black Phoenix II (1991) was created from the hull of a burnt-out fishing vessel, the Poitrel. Built by Miller and Tonnage, this maritime Phoenix went up in flames at the boat-building firm in 1984.
