Even Wisdom must occasionally concede defeat. Crafted by the Hagenauer brothers out of Untersberg marble, the Marienstatue is topped by the Virgin Mary standing on a globe. She is surrounded by 4 allegorical figures – Angel, Devil, Wisdom, and the Church. As this tourism site and the statue’s plaque explain:

Anna Chromý’s eerie figure can be seen in various sites around Europe, including the Prague Opera House and National Archaeological Museum of Athens. There is no face beneath the hood and no body under the cloak. Appropriately enough, Zuhoren means “listen!”
Salzburg’s Alte Residenz was the home of its powerful Prince-Archbishops. The barnstorming Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau was the first to live under its Baroque roof – he began construction on the palace in 1604. Spot the fake! “Sphaera” (a.k.a the man on the gold ball) was created by artist Stephan Balkenhol in 2007 for the Salzburg Foundation. His other sculpture, Frau im Feis, or “Woman in the Rock,” can be found in the rock face on Toscaninihof.
Thanks to the pedestrian-only alleys and parks, the old city is a remarkably kid-friendly place. Salzburg also hosts a number of children’s events throughout the year.
Commissioned by Archbishop Guidobald Thun and executed by Tomasso di Garona between 1656 to 1661, the Residenzbrunnen is largest Baroque fountain of its kind outside of Italy. It sits in the middle of the Residenzplatz all on its lonesome.
